Country Music Mourns Brett James After Fatal Plane Crash

The country music world is grieving the sudden death of Brett James, the Grammy-winning songwriter whose pen shaped some of Nashville’s biggest hits. James, 57, tragically died in a plane crash in Franklin, North Carolina, on September 18, 2025.

Authorities confirmed that the Cirrus SR22T aircraft was carrying James, his wife Melody Carole Wilson, and his stepdaughter Meryl Maxwell Wilson when it went down in a rural field. Sadly, all three were pronounced dead at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

James was celebrated for crafting chart-topping hits for stars like Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, and Jason Aldean. His songwriting earned him multiple awards, including a Grammy and ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honors, cementing his legacy as one of country music’s most influential voices.
