Michigan Teen Suffers Spinal Fractures After Brutal High School Football Tackle

A Michigan high school football game turned tragic when 15-year-old Colton Mims suffered severe spinal injuries after a violent “pancake” tackle during a junior varsity matchup between Lakeshore High School and Kalamazoo Central.

The shocking play, captured on video by Colton’s mother, shows a much larger opposing player slamming into him with force before landing on him twice—sparking gasps from the crowd. “As soon as I realized it was my son, I had to run down there,” said Courtney Mims. Doctors later confirmed Colton sustained two spinal fractures, sidelining him for the season and casting doubt on his football future.

Friends and community members have condemned the tackle as reckless. “It was so purposeful and impulsive,” said family friend Gretta Volkenstein. Online, parents and fans demanded accountability, with some comparing the hit to a “criminal attack.”

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) confirmed both schools are addressing the incident internally. On Monday, officials announced the opposing player would face disciplinary action, including suspension from several games.

Meanwhile, Kalamazoo Central’s varsity team dedicated their next win to Colton, as the community rallies behind his recovery.
