Wheel of Fortune Contestant Misses $1 Million by Just One Phrase
A recent episode of Wheel of Fortune delivered one of the most heartbreaking near-misses in game show history when contestant Jesse Larson came within a phrase of winning $1 million.
Larson had been dominating the game, scooping up the Wild Card, securing the elusive $1 million wedge, and even solving “Taking the Perfect Pic” to earn a luxury trip to Panama. Heading into the Bonus Round, she led with $16,400, while her nearest rival trailed far behind.
Host Ryan Seacrest, now in his first season at the helm, revealed the high-stakes twist: the usual $100,000 prize envelope had been swapped with a $1 million card. With her husband Adam, a firefighter, cheering her on, Larson spun and landed on the “Phrase” category.
The puzzle appeared as “HE _ O_ THE C_R_E.” Despite using her Wild Card to add extra letters, she couldn’t crack it. The correct answer? “Ahead of the Curve.”
Instead of $1 million—or even the $40,000 bonus—Larson left with $16,400 and a trip. Viewers quickly took to social media, calling it “brutal” and “one of the toughest losses ever.”
